what uses more battery power on laptop. a external usb disk drive for watching a dvd - or extenal hard drive?

It's knotty to say since you are saying you are looking a movie, I would assume both would Be running continuously, I would have to say the hard drive. It's not a guarantee but hard drive spindles usually gyration at a much faster rate than disc drives.
