How do you know if a laptop charger has burnt out?

I'm in bed on my laptop and had it on charge, but I just noticed that the green light on the charger had gone off, the power adapter is really hot and when I hold it to my nose it smells very slightly, has it burnt out or should I just let it cool down?

I'm using a MacBook by the way
