Does it matter which path you position a computer?

I have a PC dedktop that's like the extent of associate Xbox 360. It stands upright. Simply its been overheating and I can't find the cooling fan connected any sites, even the companies site doesn't have it. A friend suggested I acquire a laptop chilling fan but I person to position it differently so it would get the cool air. Is positioning a computer differently ok?
