How do you replace an inverter all for a laptop LCD peak?

My Dell laptop screen has gone very dark. From other things I have read, it looks same it is either the inverter or the backlight going bad. What exactly is an inverter, and how would I shift about replacing it? I'd like to try that initial before having to replace the backlight, because I have heard that is costly.
