Unplug the TV from the laptop. The display on the laptop screen should show up. Change the resolution as desired then plug the TV once more. Once the detected by the laptop, the display will switch to the TV.
Too, there's a setting in the Control Panel > Display Properties option where you can have simultaneous show, extended or single display. Against some laptops, there's also a hotkey ie ironed on top of the keyboard that toggles that setting. Try to brainwave it.
