Using laptop element a top

Hi, I would like to use my laptop as a desktop when in my office. Can I keep the lid shut only hook it up to a monitor and keyboard/mouse such that it complex like a desktop. My laptop is an ASUS - Model K72F Any advice greatly appreciated. :)
