Fix /Upgrade laptop or buy a trial one?

I have an HP Omnibook 6100 beside Windows 2000 on it which desires a reboot disc (due to virus damage), new LCD display bulb and probably upgrades to the memory and speed. I bought it for $350 from a pal about a year ago and only got about 2 months solid use out of it past it quit on me. Should I invite the list of things above whether only just go ahead and buy a new one?
