Odds are it's a bad inverter (the piece that connects your motherboard to the LCD screen). We see it ALOT at Geek Legion and odds are, it's nothing you did wrong, computers are just gauzy things and 5 years is honestly a really respectable life time all for a laptop.
The thing is, they're rather expensive to replace/fix. Expect upwards 400-500 dollars for parts and labor, plus 2 weeks of work/delivery time. You are better off just getting a new computer that has updated specs and will last you the next laptop lifetime.
