How to fix loose laptop hinges?

Depends on the type of laptop unfortunately.

On an old compaq I had the hinge jammed but was competent to be liberated by unclipping the plastic hinge cover and unscrewing (torx screws).

Be very very careful as the plastic can split in an flash and destroy the joint - also be aware that surface cables step very near (or even through) them so extra care.
