On my laptops keyboard (QWERTY) near are some ridges on the F and J buttons, what are they for?

Those are the "home keys" for your fingers...your pointer fingers to be precise. And they're they to let you know, simply by contact, that your fingers are on the home keys, ready to type. Clever huh?
