Dell laptop (refurbished) screen keeps turning black. (Like it's hibernating against its own)?

I just got my dell laptop and everything was working fine until every of a sudden the screen turns absolutely dark and then 2 secs later it turns totally black again and I have to hit the power button to turn it back on. It does this messily sometimes continuously or once every few minutes. It's like it went in hibernation mode or something. My power options are dry, I have no idea what to do. Besides contacting dell, however can i fix this on my own? I called them yesterday and they weren't able to fix it, and they're going to call back nowadays but later in the day.
