However can plugging a different power supply into ibm laptop damage it(less than the orig dominion rating)?

First of all, the power supply for a laptop is either AC or DC whether you plugged in the wrong power supply then you have blown the diodes inside, maybe resisters too...This will need shop assistance, I hope you have still got a warranty on it...
There is nix you can achieve personally unless you know thing about electronics...
