My laptop wont connect to the internet wether it be wireless or through a router?

Recently my laptop wont connect to the internet. If I try wireless internet it connects but only stays local therefore I have no internet and if I use a direct feed from the router into the laptop I dont even recieve internet. Whats the problem? Would a system restore prove beneficial?
