can I use a desktop upright in place of my laptop keyboard? I have a gateway laptop near Windows XP?

You can always use desktop weather with laptops if...
1- the laptop can have things added in, it will have USB holes (like for flashdrives)
2- the keyboard you want has a cord that fits into the flashdrive slot
