Laptop Screen Flickering & Dims bad . System remains ON.?

My laptop model IBM R52 Series, Peak is flickering and slowly with in 2-3 minutes completely becomes dim. However the system remains ON. Ive been using over a year with Direct Power, because my battery was not giving much 5 minutes backup. What could Be reason LCD Display problem or Artillery Challenge ?
