Most laptops module have a "special function" button, typically located on the bottom of the keyboard and colored bluish or several other different color. There will also be different blue (or whatever color the special function button uses) icons written by the digit keys. One will face like a monitor. Hold down the special control button and tap the cipher key that has the monitor icon on it and you can turn the laptop screen on/off while the external monitor is attached.
