Laptop eyeshade turning light and fuzzy unless inclose position?

Hi. I am using a compaq presario laptop which i have had all for a few years and very oft, the screen turns completely white with some black lines and you can single see the screen very faintly. This is corrected once i try to adjust it to a situation where it goes absent again. Sometimes I should move it right back to correct it.
Is it completely broken or can it be fixed.
