Provided it goes black but you can still faintly see the model in direct light it could just be the CCFL or backlight bulb i.e. going bad. Replacements can Be found online.
If you get absolutely nothing halogen all it could be the screen itself going or a free broken wiring connection.
Also whether possible connect to a outdoor monitor to receive sure it is not the onboard art adapter that is giving you a problem. If no signal is present on a external monitor than it is most likely time to get a new laptop as replacing the motherboard can be costly and a pain. A better or similar speced machine could perchance be had for little more.
