Laptop turns on for a few seconds then turns stale...just enough to turn on the motherboard..any ideas?

The group could be over-heated. If you leave it off for a while and turn it back on and it does the same thing, it could be permanent harm. If it works better, try using a laptop cooler you can achieve at most places that sell computer accessories.
