Hi marialyn;
it may have just overheated. If your had it in your lap or somewhere where the vents/fan are slightly wrapped then that could cause the problem. If you suspect it is overheating, near the laptop off, use a can of compressed air and slap out the vents and the fan. I use a laptop cooling pad (You can get them at most PC stores all for around 20 dollars) It plugs into the usb port and the fans keep the laptop cool.
If it starts to randomly shutdown, then I would suspect a power supply hassle or malware. If it is a power problem try on the battery first and see if it shuts down (If not then it most likely is the charger) if it shuts down then take out the battery and use just the charger, haveing the battery out while on the charger is fine and shall not damage your laptop.
